This statue of Kwaku which was given as a present, at the first of July 1963, to the Surinam nation because of 100 year emancipation of the former slaves.Kwaku means Wednesday in the ritual Kromanti language of the Marroons in Surinam and how the emancipation day was on a wednesday the statue therefore is called: Kwaku
It represents freedom and everytime some group is looking for their rights they go to this statue as asking Kwaku for strength.
But we still have a long way to go.The Dutch government had to come down and declare that they are sorry and ask for forgiveness for the unhuman treatment given to the former slaves. They had to admit that slavery is a crime against humanity.
The Transatlantic slavery built up the whole Dutch nation.
Slavery was sanctioned by the Duch Kingdom. They grow rich with the sweat and tears of my grand grandfathers.
The time has come to present the bill.
